Rescue Vessels

Coastguard Lake Taupo has two well-equipped rescue vessels able to attend emergency situations anywhere on Lake Taupo or the upper reaches of the Waikato River.

Generally, we are responsible for the Northern end of the Lake from a line between Motutaiko Island and Waihaha Beach, but in extreme circumstances and major searches, we work in conjunction with Coastguard Turangi.

Coastguard Lake Taupo operates two rescue vessels. Our main vessel, CRV Taupo Rescue, is a 9 metre Naiad rescue vessel powered by two Yamaha 250hp outboards.  It is moored at the wharf beside the Harbourmaster's Office at the Waikato River mouth.  Our second smaller vessel, CRV Mighty River Power Rescue, is a 5 metre jet powered rescue vessel.  It is stored at the Taupo Police Station, ready for rapid deployment in the upper reaches of the Waikato River or on Lake Taupo.

Each crew on board CRV Taupo Rescue or CRV Mighty River Power Rescue (MRP) is trained in boat handling, search and rescue and first aid. The crew is on call 24 hours a day to attend emergency situations or provide assistance as directed by Police or our own Marine Advisors.
